The Proclaimers – I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)

I loved the film Sunshine on Leith - although the story was an excuse to join up the best Proclaimers tracks, it featured the challenges faced by soldiers coming back from action in Afghanistan. I recognised many of the issues from my own family’s experience. And this song is also the best way ever to finish a wedding celebration.

Leonard Cohen – Hallelujah

Perhaps it is paradoxical, but in the depths of despair this puts me in touch with my feelings and brings me back.

Howard Blake – Walking In The Air

I remember my son singing this as a solo treble in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. He was dwarfed by the occasion but just stood up and let them have it.

Derek And The Dominos - Layla

I thought it was the best guitar solo ever when I first heard it in the 70s, and it still is.

Marlene Dietrich – Lili Marleen

Sensuous, evocative and haunting; understood and loved by the troops on both sides of the conflict; everyone can relate to the soldier’s feelings for the girl underneath the lantern.
