Rosie Heptonstall’s Playlist

Violet – Hole
This song reminds me of my two closest friends: Katy and Heva. Katy introduced me to Grunge back in 1995 and it was Heva who would accompany me to Jilly’s Rock World in Manchester for a night of moshing. Might explain a few things…

Sk8ter Boi – Avril Lavigne
This brings me back to the years when I first got into running. In particular I remember the frenetic drum beat propelling me through an adrenaline-fuelled kilometre of a 10k in Paisley back in 2010.

MmmBop – Hanson
This song reminds me of lying in bed at night when I was 18, thinking about the future and how exciting it all seemed. I can’t even remember what the song is about, but this was my song of hope.

Killing in the Name – Rage Against the Machine
The song brings me back to the most memorable party of my youth. I was 15 and found myself moshing to Killing in the Name all by myself. The song is so visceral, so energetic, so full of rage that I couldn’t help but be swept along by its fury.

Today – The Smashing Pumpkins
This song reminds me of the mixtape that my friend Katy made for my 18th birthday. It brings back feelings of hope and pathos, but moreover the sense of incredulity that I felt when my dad recorded over it with the Archers.
